>> i'm aaron gilchrist. we have dodged another bullet here in washington. our neighbors to the north have been hit hard, though, by a kriming snowsto -- crippling snowstorm. we saw some light sleet, didn't last for long, though. >> we dodged another bullet, but our neighbors to the north are just getting hammered. >> hurricane force winds in southern new england. the winds are still blowing 60 miles an hour in some areas. all that area in white is snow. the snow had just ended now in new jersey and in new york city. still snowing hard on long island into new england. many places in connecticut have nearly a foot of heavy, wet snow. it has been wind-driven. for us, reagan national, we had a little bit of flurry and sleet activity from about 10:00 last night until 1:00, 2:00 this morning. now all of that has pretty much

ended. although we still have a few scattered sprinkles in prince george's county. now it's changed back to some sprinkles. a few of those scattered spri s sprinkles will be with us the next few hours. well above freezing, as we anticipated that the impact would be very small for us. it's just in the upper 30s to 40 all across northern virginia into maryland. a few isolated spots have dipped down to near freezing. should not have any travel problems here locally this morning. just a few flurries this morning. cloudy still around noontime. during the afternoon, ought to get some breaks in the clouds. i'll be back in ten minutes. danella is here with a look at our very early morning traffic. >> volume very, very light. not seeing any accidents right now. but seeing road work.

let's talk about it. traveling westbound 66 approaching the beltway, the right side of the road will get you by the work zone there. if you're traveling along 7 in virginia, the ramps to inner loop of the beltway, construction happening there and those ramps are shut down. let's talk about a disabled tractor-trailer. this one, outer loop of the beltway approaching university boulevard. just off to your shoulder lane here, your right shoulder lane, hazards are on. travel lanes are open, not seeing any other issues to worry about right now. the new storm hammering the northeast is responsible for at least 100,000 new power outages in parts of new york and new jersey. the rain and wet snow is piling up on homes already damaged by sandy. the long island railroad, one of the nation's biggest commuter train systems, suspended all service. the conditions are recovering

the sandy effort as well. >> you may have a setback. i'm prepared for that. i hate setbacks. i don't tolerate them usually very well. but this one i can't control. the weather is what it is. and we're going to have to deal with it. >> state police urged residents to leave low lying neighborhoods, but people many are staying behind because they fear looting. >> this is only adding to the misery for people who haven't had power or gas for days because of sandy. andrew has more from oyster bay, long island. >> the sight of snow for communities now wondering if they'll have power by thanksgiving, seemed like a crude joke. >> kind of laughing about it. it's unbelievable. a hurricane to a nor'easter and driving in the snow within ten days, it's pretty unbelievable. >> but the pounding surf and flat-out annoying nor'easter stung people in oysterway bay. one of so many communities on

long island where there are still big power problems, and yet everyone's been trying to get back to work, and now this. >> just getting around is tough. having no power is a pain in the [ bleep ]. just keeping everybody warm and getting food. >> reporter: pamela caesar figured maybe the one silver lining of tonight's storm, she could beat the gas lines. no such luck at this slush-coated station. >> you pulled in here hoping they'd get a shipment of gas tonight? >> exactly. they're not giving me a time, but i'm hoping that hopefully around 10:00 or so. >> north of there in connecticut, drivers are dealing with treacherous road conditions. dumping as much as six inches of snow in new england. the storm is causing hundreds of flight delays and cancellations. megan mcgrath is live at reagan national airport. what's the status where you are?

>> reporter: good morning. what we're seeing here at reagan national, just wet tarmac. no problems here. but in new york, we are seeing cancellations. take a look at the board here. sort of hit or miss. this is laguardia airport. the 6:00 a.m. is on time, but the 6:15 has been cancelled. if you look down the line, it's a similar situation. the 7:00 on time. the 7:59 is cancelled. the advice is that you're just going to have to call your airline. yesterday they were recommending that passengers actually cancel or rearrange their flights to avoid that area if possible. it really depends on your need and when you need to be to your destination. but keep in mind that there is a possibility that you could see cancellations and delays today. if you are flexible, you might want to do that. certainly you're going to want to call your airline ahead of time. the flights in the new york area, they had many, many cancellations yesterday. as of 4:00 p.m. yesterday, 1,300 flights cancelled.

40% of them were at the newark airport. still expecting big problems there today. whenever you see cancellations, you see the trickle down effect. they have difficulty moving plains around, and that causes problems elsewhere in the country. the advice is to be flexible, call your airline. if you do decide to change your flight, the airlines -- the major carriers are waiving those fees for making those changes. they want to accommodate people, move them around and get them to their destinations. but right now, not a great situation. we're still seeing snow in new york. the weather conditions are expected to improve, but until it really stps and they can clean everything up, we are expecting to see continued problems here. at reagan national at really at airports around the country. in our other headlines. police in prince george's county looking for the gunman who shot and killed a man in hill crest heights.

the shooting was reported last night around 7:00. they found a man outside the apartment with a gunshot wound. in northeast d.c., an unusual investigation near gallaudet university. the body of someone was found outside a burning car just off brentwood parkway around 9:00 last night. no word on the cause of death. we are working to find out more from police. president obama is back in washington. he and the rest of the first family arrived last night from chicago where they celebrated the president's re-election. he comes back to work with a big issue before him. congressional leaders from both parties say that now that the election is over they can work with the president on a deal to avoid the so called fiscal cliff. that would mean spending cuts and tax hikes that could plunge the nation into another recession. >> mr. president, this is your moment. we're ready to be led. not as democrats or republicans. but as americans. we want you to lead. not as a liberal or conservative. but as president of the united

welcome back. it is just 41 degrees out there. still cold. but luckily, not a whole lot of snow on the ground. there was some sleet overnight, though. >> tom kierein is in storm center 4 with a look at our forecast. >> good morning. you should not have any trouble at all. we did not have any precipitation stick anywhere. we did have a little bit of snow and sleet two or three hours it lasted between 11:00, 1:00, 2:00 this morning, but now it's gone. and still snowing and still strong winds. that powerful coastal storm pounding new jersey, new york, new england. winds are still gusting over 60 miles an hour. they've had over a foot of snow in some places in connecticut. and here locally, we're just getting a few scattered sprinkles around. we have a bit of a blustery

wind, too. temperatures are hovering to around 40 degrees. winds gusting to around 15, 20 miles an hour. many gusts a little bit higher than that, but just maybe an isolated sprinkle or flurry this morning, and during the afternoon, some sun should break out. the wind still a bit blustery, gusting to around 30 miles an hour. a look at your seven-day outlook, improving news for tomorrow and into the weekend. we'll look at that into next week in ten minutes. danella has a look at traffic. >> unfortunately, tracking an early morning accident. i-95 just north of 32. crash looks to be on the left side of the roadway. i can tell emergency response workers just recently arriving to the scene. as you're making your commuter, stick to the right lane because two of your left lanes are blocked. again, this crash, i-95 northbound in maryland just north of 32. traveling i-95 in virginia, nice and clear. here's a live look at the

today, the man who pleaded guilty to a deadly shooting at an arizona supermarket will be sentenced. jared lee loughner killed six and wounded 13. one of the women, gabrielle giffords, is supposed to attend that sentencing. her husband mark kelly will speak in her behalf. the man believed to be the east coast rapist will be back

in a northern virginia courtroom later this month. 41-year-old aaron thomas is expected to plead guilty to the 2009 attack on three teenagers in prince william county and to the 2001 rape of a 41-year-old woman in her leesburg apartment. thomas was arrested last year in connecticut after a multi--year search. he is believed for at least 17 attacks on women since 1997 in virginia, maryland, connecticut, and rhode island. thomas faces life in prison for both pleas. in the days ahead, we will get a preview of the holiday shipping season. the postal service kicks off its holiday rush. they say they process between 600 million pieces of mail a day between thanksgiving and christmas eve. millions of users can take advantage of online shipping. this is also the 100th anniversary of the letters to santa program. the post office makes sure santa gets his mail and delivers his messages to the kids. always nice. if you're flying somewhere for this thanksgiving, you need to book your flight now.

experts say flying this thanksgiving will be busier and more expensive. planes are expected to be about 90% full, which is a new record. plus airlines have been cutting back on flights overall, which means your ticket could cost you more. overall, more than 23 million are expected to take to the skies. the busiest days, sunday and monday after thanksgiving. and new this morning, walmart kicked off the holiday shopping season but unveiling some of its black friday campaign, already. the retail giant will open at 8:00 on thanksgiving. this that is the earliest start ever. does that mean you're skipping the dinner? walmart says some of the deals will include $38 blu-ray players, video games starting at $10, and home appliances like a crock pot slow cooker and mr. coffee maker for $9.44 each. i might need one of those crock pots, aaron. >> no, you don't. d.c. united fans will have to wait until tonight to watch game two of the series.

snow postponed the game. grounds crews tried to clear the field. unfortunately, mother nature just wouldn't cooperate. game 2 is now set for 7:30 tonight. the teams played to a 1-1 draw in the opener. a $9.44 crock pot isn't worth getting? i'm not going to miss my family dinner. >> neither will your husband, so don't ask him. >> but that sounds good. >> pretty dry around these parts right now. let's check your forecast. >> that storm just missed us, because it is a powerful koesz tall storm. you can see it spinning away here on radar. it almost looks like a hurricane here. it is just to the south of nantucket. here's cape cod and massachusetts, right now getting snow from nova scotia, maine, into new hampshire, massachusetts, parts of rhode island, connecticut. in fact, central and western connecticut, that's the bull's eye of the heaviest snow. they've had nearly a foot of snow in many locations there and it's still coming down. long island as well. new york city, they had about

six to seven inches of snow in queens and areas just east of manhattan and farther south, much of new jersey had six to eight inches of snow. but it has ended there now, thankfully. also the winds. they were gusting to hurricane force late yesterday afternoon and into last night. they diminished a little bit, but still gusting to around 60 miles an hour. for us, close up view, storm team 4 radar showing just a few scattered sprinkles. maybe a little sleet mixing in, but all the road temperatures will well above freezing. we have a few of those in western fairfax county, southern loudoun, as well as prince george's and the northern neck of virginia, just a few scattered sprinkles there. it is cold in the mountains off to our west below freezing. all the areas in the lighter blue are in the mid to upper 30s to 40 degrees.

for the morning hours, clouds around, just a small chance of a scattered flurry. the winds will begin to pick up a bit and start gusting to around 25, 30 miles an hour by later this afternoon. now let's go to danella with our first 4 traffic. >> thanks, tom. still checking on that accident along northbound i-95 just north of 32. an update for you. it involves an overturned box truck. you are able to get by but you have to stick to the right to get past it. i-270 at montrose road, in both directions north and south between clarksburg and the beltway. outside and inside the beltdway, accident-free as well as no more construction. cones if you're traveling westbound approaching the beltway. that work zone is clear and your

lanes are open. back over to you. news4 at the news desk with break news. >> we learned a man was arrested for breaking into nancy pelosi's home. her home was broken into earlier this week. police found two doors broken but no other damage. it's still unclear if anything was stolen. police say the burglar was arrested for trying to break into a nearby home. he also confessed to a number of burglaries, including the one at pelosi's house. at the live desk, tony tull, news4. we want to go to staten island, new york, now. katherine craig is there looking at all the snow that has come down in that area. >> reporter: good morning from staten island, which is snow-covered. this has been a wild week and a very extraordinarily difficult week. for the people out here on staten island, the people who had their electricity back, lost it again because of the

nor'easter that came through last night. this is what one of the piles of debris looks like out here. that's the thing. everything is snow covered. at least half a foot of snow fell on to parts of staten island. people actually went to shelters, to evacuation centers that were set up. there were buses all around staten island in different neighborhoods set up so people could have a place where they could stay warm. about 9,400 customers were without electricity yesterday morning. even more people lost hour as the nor'easter moved through. now we are being told by con edison that about 14,000 people have no electricity. the sanitation crews, they've been out and about picking up debris from all of these piles of debris. they've been talking them to the dump. they're also dealing with snowplowing. a lot of work has been done. we've been talking with some residents who opted to stay in their homes because they didn't really want looters or burglars to break into their home, so they stayed in their homes.

they don't have electricity. a lot of them don't have water. but they said it was a better situation staying in their homes. they pretty much rode out the storm and we're going to check on them later today. it is once again a tough morning for staten island. back to you. a developing story in guatemala. at least 48 people are dead after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit near the border of mexico. the earthquake triggered landslides, destroying homes, buildings, and blocking roads. this is the strongest earthquake to hit guatemala since 1975. prosecutors say they found the man who stole a truck with president obama's audio equipment in it. federal officers charged eric brown of richmond with the theft of government property. he disappeared from a parking lot last friday. a defense department agency says no classified or sensitive information was in the truck. brown faces up to ten years in prison if convicted. it's a sign of just how much

attention the election has received around the world. in kenya, a mother decided to name her newborn twins barack obama and mitt romney. she named them hours after the results of the election were announced. a nurse at the hospital said it is not unusual for babies to be named after famous people. in 2008, she says some babies named their babies barack or joe biden. >> i like that. don't be surprised if you've lost a few friends on facebook if you shared your thoughts on the election. the legislation sparking a facebook feud, if you will. many people ranted or raved about president obama's re-election. those posts often offended friends with different political believes. some took the dramatic action of unfriending. there's always the possibility of unsubscribing. >> defriending is a pretty
